Student Internship Programme Aims To Inspire The Next Generation Of Construction Professionals
Global equipment solutions provider, Terex Construction, has announced the appointment of three placement students for its 2015/16 internship programme. The practical training scheme, which is run in partnership with Harper Adams University, will see the second year off-road vehicle design students undertake a 12-month placement at the Terex manufacturing facility in Coventry, UK.
From new product development and factory operations management to equipment testing and industry research, each student will get hands-on training experience with a number of different roles within the business; developing practical skills to further support their academic studies.
Returning to university for a final year and examinations, each student will have undertaken a comprehensive training programme at one of the world’s leading equipment manufacturing businesses – putting them in the perfect position to start a career in the industry.
“As the construction industry continues to grow, demand for higher-level skills is increasing rapidly,” commented Paul Macpherson, Sales and Marketing Director at the Terex Construction Coventry facility. “In fact, according to the latest research insight from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), 55% of companies fear they will not be able to access enough workers with the required skills in the next few years, while 33% mention that they are already investing significant finances in training new recruits lacking basic practical experience.
“As such, nurturing the talent of tomorrow is becoming a key priority for the equipment sector, which makes providing practical placement opportunities for school leavers and university students absolutely vital.
“Our internship programme with Harper Adams University not only provides in-depth training for students studying the latest vehicle design courses, but also encourages graduates to consider a career in the construction sector following their studies.
“Since launching the scheme in 2013, we’ve helped several students to gain valuable experience in equipment production. As well as inspiring the next generation, this has also enabled us to identify talented individuals at an early stage. We’ve recently taken on one of the programme’s very first students as a full time team member, which truly demonstrates the benefits of this academic partnership.”
