Terex Cranes apprentice from Zweibrücken
becomes world welding champion
The german team takes second place

Zweibrücken, June 24, 2016 – It was cause for great joy: at this year’s Arc Cup world welding championships for young welders, which took place in Beijing from 18 to 20 June, Terex Cranes apprentice Elias Sutter won the world championship title in his discipline of hand arc welding, while the overall German team took 2nd place. The apprentice from Zweibrücken was overwhelmed: “For me, just getting to the world championships and competing against the best young welders in the world was in itself a fantastic success. I can hardly believe that I have now actually won the title.”

Klaus Beulker, Senior Director Operations & Managing Director Zweibrücken also offers his congratulations and is delighted that his young employee has achieved such outstanding success. “The fact that our apprentice Elias Sutter competed in the world championships in Beijing is further evidence of the high level of training at our Zweibrücken site, which has for a long time been among the best in the world. A key person in this latest success is our training supervisor Jürgen Hoffmann, who has been committed to the development of our young people for many years. I should therefore like to explicitly thank him too at this point.

For Heribert Bussmann, Group VP Global Engineering, Product Management & Marketing, the winning of the title demonstrates the success of the company’s strategy of promoting the development of young employees and enabling them to become among the best in their profession: “Welding is a core competence in the construction of large cranes — and with our Terex Cranes and Demag brands we are a world-class player in this field. This is due to our highly trained employees who, like Elias Sutter, have been outstandingly well trained by us.”

The “long march” to Beijing

It was partly on account of this favourable background that Elias Sutter was able to qualify for the four-man German team by winning the hand arc welding section of the national “Jugend schweißt” welding competition in September 2015. A month later the German team went on to secure its place at the world championships in China by taking a superb second place at the European Welding Cup in the British city of Cambridge. There the German team with Elias Sutter faced the best young welders from 29 countries, who competed in four welding disciplines.

In preparation for the world championships, the four young welders spent a week undergoing intensive practice at the training centre of the Schweißtechnische Kursstätte SK Pfalz GmbH. “The training camp almost on my own doorstep was of course a stroke of luck for me — as was the support from my trainer at Terex Cranes, Jürgen Hoffmann, who also came with us to Beijing. We have a lot to thank him for,” stated the new world champion immediately after winning the title.
