Memphis Rock n Soul Museum

This museum, created by the Smithsonian Institution, is a tribute to the birth of rock and soul music. Located on legendary Beale Street, this museum chronicles this music that overcame racial and social barriers to become what it is today. Incorporating the history of rock and soul music from the 1930s, through the birth of legendary record labels like Sun Studios, Stax, and Hi Records, up to the 1970s – when Memphis was in its prime and the development of this music’s global influence.

Developed by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of American History in 1996, the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum offers visitors a chance to enjoy the seven galleries at their own pace with a digital audio tour packed with over 300 minutes of information, including over 100 songs. Visitors can revel in over 30 instruments, 50 costumes, and other musical treasures or take in one of the 3 audio visual programs during their tour.
