Terex Campsie Wins Two North West Business Awards

Terex Campsie was delighted to win two North West Business Awards on Friday, 9th June—an award for Northwest Business of the Year and the Educational Partnership award. The awards, which are recognised as one of the most distinguished events for celebrating local businesses throughout the Northwest region of Ireland, were a fantastic platform to share insights about our business journey, achievements, and aspirations, while also highlighting the positive impact Terex Campsie has brought to the local community.

Jonathan Hanna, “Credit goes to all Terex Campsie team members for their contributions in making our site an award-winning business in the Northwest of Ireland. Thank you and well done to those roles based at Terex Campsie, as well as our Engineering team at Farlough, and to all those who contribute to the success of our site by travelling the globe and serving our customer’s needs. These awards are a fantastic recognition for our hard work in growing the site!”

Large Business of the Year Award

The judging panel was impressed by the growth of Terex Campsie in such a short space of time as well how the team demonstrates good stakeholder relations and ethical credentials.

Terex Campsie opened in 2019 to focus on the design, manufacture, and development of the growing environmental sector. Terex Campsie has become of key importance to Terex in supplying sustainable equipment that supports the circular economy – not only a key growth area for Terex but key to our Economic and Social Governance strategy.

Terex Campsie now has a fantastic local team in place who are trained in Terex’s world-class manufacturing processes. While the site originally manufactured and exported environmental and conveying equipment, it has since expanded to increase capacity and manufacture equipment for renowned crushing and screening brands including Powerscreen and Finlay.

At that time of Terex Campsie’s opening in 2019, the site was a 105,000 square foot facility manufacturing heavy environmental and conveying equipment.  The site has since grown to cope with growth of the environmental sector and demand for our products globally, despite coming through challenging years during and post the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, just one year on from its opening, Terex Campsie made further investment with the completion of the second stage of the Campsie facility, which includes a large capacity shed offering an additional 30,000 square foot with high lifting capabilities. A third hall was completed in 2022 and Terex Campsie is not stopping there, with plans for a fourth hall. Further investment in the site includes work having commenced on the car park to provide more spaces and the canteen area is to be expanded with a fully functional canteen facility.

Hand in hand with this is a sustained recruitment drive. When Terex Campsie opened in 2019 it started with only 6 fitters and one person in stores. The site has grown to employ 90 fitters, and 18 people working in stores.

Recruitment has been a key challenge and one way Terex is trying to address this is attracting more women into manufacturing. Last year, Terex Campsie took on an innovative approach to break down the stereotype that manufacturing roles are just for men through its ‘Female Fitter Academy’, a recruitment drive that has successfully hired six female assembly fitters at Campsie.

Due to the success of the initiative, Terex Campsie worked with five local secondary schools on a ‘Workwear Challenge’, where students presented designs for workwear that was specifically tailored for women.  Working with our local schools helps us break the gender stereotypes around careers in manufacturing as, through educating students on our industry, we can empower young girls to feel more confident in pursuing a career in manufacturing and/or engineering.

Finally, the judging panel was impressed by the value Terex Campsie places on Citizenship and how the site engages with the local community, raising much needed funds for worthwhile local charities.

Educational Partnership Award

The judging panel was impressed at the efforts of Terex Campsie in engaging with educational institutions such as MEGA - Manufacturing & Engineering Growth & Advancement, Ulster University, and NWRC to establish training, apprenticeship and graduate programmes and ensure young people have the right skillset that will enable a variety of career pathways with Terex. An example is Terex Campsie’s work with NWRC since 2019, when the site opened, establishing the Hydraulics Training Course as most of the new starts were not form this sector and needed skills training. Other successes highlighted on the application was:

•    Partnering with MEGA to offer student from Magee University a place to undergo degree apprenticeship in Manufacturing Engineering

•    NWRC – HLA in conjunction with the and take at least 1 student each year.  Have been working with NWRC since 2019 when Campsie opened.  As a result of our partnership, NWRD now provides Hydraulics Training Course as most of the new starts were not form this sector and needed skills training

•    This is Terex Campsie’s 3rd year sponsoring Engineer of the Year award at UU Magee.

•    Work With QUB, UU and ATU (previously Letterkenny Institute of Technology) – participating at careers events and promote and advertise our graduate roles on their dedicated graduate job websites

•    Derry City Council Careers Fairs

•    STEM Week – attended St. Mary’s Thornhill promoting Terex and our offerings

•    STEM Networking Event – this meeting was hosted in Terex Campsie and teachers from local schools attended and found out more about Terex – who we are and what we do and the different careers we offer.

To receive not one, but two awards is fantastic recognition of Terex Campsie’s performance in these areas and their sustained engagement with stakeholders throughout the Northwest of Ireland. Both awards are a credit to the entire Terex Campsie site and the team should be incredibly proud of this accomplishment!
