EVOQUIP CRUSH ILLEGAL IVORY

The EvoQuip Cobra 260R Impactor took centre stage at the recent “Ivory Crush” event held in Central Park, New York. Now in its third year the event is designed to highlight and eradicate the illegal elephant poaching worldwide. Prior Ivory Crush events were held in 2013 in Denver and in 2015 in Times Square, New York.

Matt Dickson, EvoQuip Business Line Director said, “We were delighted to have the opportunity to participate in such a worthwhile event. I would like to thank our local dealer Emerald Equipment Systems for their help and assistance preparing and operating the machine for the Ivory Crush.”

Doing the honours, the EvoQuip Cobra 260R crushed nearly two tons of trinkets, statutes and jewellery crafted from the tusks of at least 100 slaughtered elephants, demonstrating the state’s commitment to smashing the illegal ivory trade.

This year’s event was organised by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and co-hosted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DES), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Tiffany & Co.

The ivory trade generates millions of dollars each year, with the majority of illegal ivory used to make trinkets, statues and jewellery, which are sold in markets around the world. Almost 2 tons of confiscated ivory, with a street value of $8.5 million, was crushed using the Cobra 260R, donated by EvoQuip Distributor Emerald Equipment Systems.

The EvoQuip Cobra 260R was the natural choice for the job, with compact design and mobility it was easily transported through New York City to Central Park for the event. The 34” rotor with 4 blow bar direct drive chamber made light work of the ivory. A 8’ x 4’ single deck screen ensured that any oversized ivory was recirculated and re-crushed until the desired size was obtained to enable further disposal.

Event organisers hope that the crushing of tusks and trinkets will deter people from buying ivory products and lead to the eventual shutdown of the illegal ivory trade.
