MDS Celebrates 30 Years of Engineering Excellence and Community Roots

October 20, 2025

From a modest farm shed in Magheracloone to a globally recognised name in heavy-duty screening equipment, MDS® is proud to celebrate 30 years in business. Founded in 1995 by Liam and Una Murray, the business began with small custom projects for local customers, Christmas tree stands, turnstiles for GAA clubs, and agricultural equipment, built with ingenuity and a hands-on spirit that still defines the team today.

Among those who helped shape MDS from the very beginning is long-serving team member Paul McEneaney. Paul, a Fitter who joined in the first year, recalls the early days of working side-by-side with Liam Murray: “We started in a shed just 5m by 15m. I’ve seen MDS grow from that tiny space to two large factories. Every machine was different, and every challenge taught us something new. It’s been a journey of constant learning and improvement.”

The growth of MDS took a major leap in 2014 with the development of the first MDS rock trommel, the M515. This innovation marked a shift from subcontracting to specialist manufacturing and was soon followed by the M412 and M413 compact trommels—machines that carried the same DNA and durability, tailored for smaller-scale operations.

Liam Og Murray, son of the founders and now Regional Sales Manager for MDS, has been part of the business from a young age, growing up around the workshop. His passion for continuing his parents’ legacy is evident in the culture of MDS and commitment to quality. “As someone who has been part of this journey for many years, it means a lot to see the brand reach this milestone. The past 30 years have been shaped by hard work, adaptability and a clear belief in doing things properly,” he said.

Since joining global powerhouse Terex in 2021, MDS has expanded its international reach and invested in infrastructure including a state-of-the-art paintshop and redesigned models. MDS has also applied its engineering expertise to the recycling sector, launching new models to meet growing environmental demands.

But the success of MDS isn’t just measured in machines, it’s also about people and place. The team took part in the Carrickmacross Street Festival in 2023, proudly showcasing a finished machine and connecting with local families and future talent. Children donned PPE gear and explored the machinery, while the team shared opportunities and celebrated their role as a local employer with global impact. The team also marked International Men’s Day last year with decorated cakes alongside the arrival of the Game of Thrones Iron Throne, a celebration that honoured the positive role models within the team and who help make MDS a great place to work.

Earlier this year, as part of its commitment to inspiring the next generation, MDS welcomed students from Coláiste Dún an Rí to its Carrickmacross site during International Women’s Day. The visit included a site tour and hands-on activities, giving students a glimpse into engineering careers and the innovation behind MDS products. The team hopes the experience sparked curiosity and ambition among the students, some of whom may one day join the MDS workforce

As MDS enters its fourth decade, the company welcomes Steven Keenan as its new General Manager. Steven brings technical and commercial experience, having served as Engineering Manager for the past three years and previously held roles at Terex Omagh in Northern Ireland. “I want to congratulate the entire MDS team on reaching this fantastic milestone,” said Steven. “As we grow our global distribution network, we’re making sure our renowned models have even greater impact across international markets. But just as importantly, we’re staying true to the values that got us here; investing in our people, supporting our community, and building a future that reflects the spirit Liam and Una built into MDS from day one.”
