WECO Uganda School & Orphanage

From all of the team at MDS, we would like to wish our HSE Manager, Cathy the best of luck on her amazing trip to Uganda, East Africa on Saturday, 26th February.

Cathy is heading out to help at to an Orphanage in Masala, about 2 hours from Kampala.

A little bit about the background of this orphanage:

Age of students in classroom:

4 – 13 years

Students status:

Orphans without both parents or one parent dead.
They have recruited young mothers as teachers, caregivers, and jobless youths to join. The staff also supports
the local market when they buy their produce for school meals. Currently, their junior school has enrolled 83
students with only 3 rented temporary classrooms, and a staff of 6 teachers. With a growing need and limited
space, the team has pledged the fund and labour to provide a new classroom allowing more kids access to the
amazing care and education they deserve.
Also funded a water well which has been installed and we will be finished off the last or the labour.

For the last couple of days Cathy, will be travelling to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park to trek
amongst the world’s last remaining Mountain Gorillas.
In 1981, environmentalists estimated there were only 254 mountain gorillas left in the world, but the small
population is rising slowly thanks to intense international conservation efforts. Since these critically endangered
creatures can’t survive in captivity, the only way to see them is by trekking up to their natural habitat: misty
cloud forests that can reach altitudes of 14,763 feet.
