When Outsourcing Fleet Maintenance Makes Sense

Maintaining a regular maintenance schedule, whether through in-house resources or by outsourcing to a trusted partner, will keep any utility company’s equipment fleet up and running for a long time.

If a utility truck has any issue that cannot be fixed by the company’s in-house service crew, additional trained technicians or mechanics should be involved. It’s a good idea for utilities to have strong relationships with their equipment manufacturer and service provider, like Terex Utilities and Terex Services, and to utilize them as resources to help maintain their utility fleet.

Depending on the skill level and availability of a utility company’s service staff, outsourcing fleet maintenance tasks may be more cost-effective and convenient. Even with full-time mechanics on staff, capacity may be an issue.

By working with the equipment manufacturer to develop service programs, a variety of benefits can be realized

  • The OEM can help the customer address all the points in a maintenance program, document all maintenance activity, and anticipate future needs including parts orders, warranty work, compliance with industry standards and required manufacturer service updates.

  • It can also be beneficial to take advantage of the OEM’s expertise in the equipment, specialized mechanic skills, parts ordering, warranty repairs and documentation of work done.

  • The OEM’s service programs can help plan out a fleet’s maintenance needs for an entire year, providing the opportunity to better plan for downtime and to allocate costs against the equipment budget

  • Service programs often catch issues with machines when they are minor problems, reducing the need to call a service technician for repair work outside of the regularly scheduled maintenance checks.

Terex offers preventative maintenance and inspection programs that are tailored to minimize downtime and customized to fit the specific utility’s needs. The programs are available for both new and existing equipment in the utility’s fleet. For more information about these programs, visit Terex Preventative Maintenance Programs
