Bihel Turns Excavation Waste into a Valuable Resource

June 29, 2026

At Bihel, sustainability and performance go hand in hand. Faced with growing volumes of excavation and construction & demolition waste, the business needed a smarter way to recover value from materials that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

Working with Terex Washing Systems, Bihel installed a complete wet processing solution capable of treating complex, heavily contaminated material streams - including earth backfill, road deconstruction waste, sediments, and crushed concrete.

The plant operates at up to 140 tonnes per hour, running 10 hours per day, 48 weeks per year, transforming challenging input material into high-quality recycled aggregates and sands suitable for reuse in construction.

At the heart of the process is an integrated washing solution that combines intensive scrubbing, precise classification, and advanced contaminant removal. Plastics, wood, polystyrene, organics, vegetation, and hydrocarbons are efficiently removed, while cemented and clay-bound material is broken down through attrition to maximise

recovery.

A dedicated sand processing circuit ensures clean, well-graded sand products, while dewatering technology delivers stockpile-ready material. Supporting the entire operation is an advanced water treatment system, allowing up to 95% of process water to be recycled, significantly reducing fresh water consumption and environmental impact.

The result is a modern, high performance recycling operation that generates a broad range of washed aggregate and sand products - turning waste into a valuable resource and helping Bihel reduce Landfill dependency while supporting a more circular construction economy.
