Turning Waste into Value: Ghelma’s Sustainable Washing Solution

Ghelma partnered with Terex Washing Systems and Avesco AG to transform excavation waste into high-quality sand and aggregates. The 90tph washing plant maximises material recovery, reduces landfill reliance, and improves operational efficiency and sustainability. This supports Ghelma’s ongoing commitment to the circular economy.

Problem

Ghelma, a leading Swiss construction company, needed a solution to process excavation material, sand, and gravel, much of which was previously considered waste. The challenge was to recover valuable resources, reduce disposal costs, and support sustainable operations.

Solution

Terex Washing Systems, in close partnership with distributor Avesco AG, delivered a bespoke washing solution designed to maximise material recovery and efficiency. The system included:

  • H9 Feeder, which ensures a consistent feed into the plant
  • PS60 Logwasher, removing though clays and contaminants from heavily contaminated material
  • 12x5 2-deck pre-screen and 6x2 trash screen for removing unwanted debris before processing
  • 8x4 3-deck full rinser post-screen to classify and rinse final products
  • FM60C 2-Grade double wash and plant for precise sand classification and washing
  • Freshwater pump and settling pond to support efficient water recycling

Results

  • Ghelma now produces a range of valuable materials, including multiple aggregate sizes and fine sand
  • Excavation waste is repurposed, cutting landfill use and conserving water through integrated recycling
  • Lower disposal costs and new revenue from recycled materials have improved operational efficiency
  • The solution supports Ghelma's sustainability goals by reducing reliance on virgin resources

“This advanced washing plant not only enhances Ghelma’s operational efficiency but also supports their sustainability goals by promoting the circular economy and conserving resources,” Terex said.

“The Terex Washing Systems solution, delivered in close partnership with Avesco, has allowed us to turn what was once waste into high-value materials. The system has improved our efficiency, reduced disposal costs, and supported our commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.”
