Transforming Waste: Thompsons of Prudhoe Launches Newcastle’s Urban Quarry

Thompsons of Prudhoe is advancing sustainable construction in Newcastle with a state-of-the-art Terex Washing Systems plant that transforms construction and demolition waste into high-quality recycled aggregates, diverting over 300,000 tonnes from landfill each year.

Problem

Thompsons of Prudhoe, with over 75 years of expertise in demolition and site reclamation, set out to tackle a growing challenge: large volumes of construction and demolition waste were being sent to landfill. The impacts included:

  • Increased environmental strain and landfill use
  • Missed opportunities to recover valuable materials
  • Rising waste disposal costs
  • Growing demand for sustainable and local aggregates in urban projects

Solution

In partnership with Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd and Terex Washing Systems, Thompsons of Prudhoe is developing a cutting-edge Feeder to Filterpress wash plant near Newcastle, purpose-built to process construction and demolition waste. Key features include:

  • Full-loop crushing circuit to maximise material recovery
  • Advanced wash system designed for mixed C&D waste
  • Fully integrated Terex equipment for seamless performance
  • Designed as Newcastle’s first urban quarry, reducing transport emissions and supplying recycled materials close to site

Results

  • 300,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill each year, supporting national sustainability targets
  • Located within the city, the plant reduces transport emissions and supplies recycled materials closer to where they’re needed
  • 85% of water is recovered and reused on site, minimising freshwater demand
  • Strengthens Thompsons of Prudhoe’s position as an industry leader in sustainable construction
  • A successful collaboration between Thompsons, Blue Machinery, and Terex showcases innovation in C&D waste recycling
