The Critical Role of Equipment Safety Decals and How to Apply Them


Safety decals are indispensable components of a comprehensive safety strategy. By effectively communicating hazards, instructions, and emergency procedures, they contribute to a safer work environment, reduce accidents, and protect lives. Investing in high-quality, well-designed safety decals is not just a regulatory requirement—it's a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of everyone in the workplace. 

  • Clear Communication: Safety decals communicate in a concise and visually impactful manner. Essential information is displayed, which may include operational instructions, safety protocols, potential hazards, or emergency procedures.
  • Risk Mitigation: Safety decals caution operators about potential dangers and risks that come with the utility equipment, such as moving parts, lethal voltages, or hazardous materials.
  • Compliance and Regulations: In the electric utility industry, it is mandatory to follow and adhere to safety regulations. Safety decals play a key role in regulatory compliance by ensuring that equipment meets required guidelines.
  • Training and Education: Safety decals serve as valuable educational tools, especially for new or inexperienced operators. By providing visual cues and reminders, decals reinforce safety training and help users retain critical information.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Safety decals provide valuable guidance for immediate and effective responses to crises, like locating emergency shut-off switches. 

Safety decals MUST be replaced immediately if they become unreadable or lost. If the product is repaired and parts with safety signs have been replaced, be sure new safety signs are fitted before the product is put into service.  

Applying Safety Decals on Equipment 

Properly applying decals ensures that workers remain informed, and equipment is operated safely. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to effectively apply safety decals to your equipment: 

  1. Gather your Supplies: This includes safety decals, cleaning supplies such as rubbing alcohol or a mild detergent solution, a clean cloth, and possibly a squeegee or similar tool for smooth application. Use mild soap and water to clean safety signs - DO NOT use solvent-based cleaners, as they may damage the safety sign material. 

  2. Prep the Surface: Any dirt, grease, or residue can hinder the decal's adhesion and lead to premature peeling. Use rubbing alcohol or a mild detergent solution to remove any contaminants and allow the surface to dry completely. 

  3. Apply Carefully: Peel the backing from the safety decal, exposing the adhesive side. Do not touch the adhesive side with your fingers, as oils from your skin can reduce its effectiveness. Align the safety decal with the desired location on the equipment's surface and begin applying pressure to the decal, starting from the center, and working your way outward. Use a squeegee or similar tool to smooth out any air bubbles and ensure proper adhesion. 

  4. Check for Air Bubbles: If any air bubbles are trapped under the decal, gently lift the affected area, and smooth it out with your fingers or the squeegee. Take your time to ensure a bubble-free application, as trapped air can weaken the decal's bond with the surface. 

  5. Inspect the decal: Once the safety decal is applied, inspect it carefully to ensure it is securely attached and free of wrinkles or imperfections. Double-check that all edges are firmly adhered to the surface.  

  6. Going Forward: Document where the safety decals were placed on the equipment for future reference. Regularly inspect the decals for signs of wear or damage and replace them as needed to ensure continued visibility and effectiveness.
